About Stephanie
Hello,
My name is Stephanie Donich and I am President, aka Headz Honcho, of Cool Headz Hats.
Life is a journey that takes us to unknown places. Seven years ago I never could have imagined that the diagnosis of ovarian cancer would lead me to where I am today. The diagnosis was a devastating blow; I thought I understood what I was in for because I had cared for a sister with the same disease as well as supported several friends through cancer. Yet, as those of us who are diagnosed with cancer understand, you only truly know what people with cancer are going through when you go through it yourself.
After all I had to contend with, I was surprised at how difficult I found the process of losing my hair. Was it because I would now be marked as a cancer “victim”? Perhaps it was because I was losing an outlet to express myself. I am not sure but my own experience has given me new empathy.
When I realized I couldn’t stop the hair loss, I looked around for head coverings and was disappointed at what I found. Most turbans screamed cancer, scarves lacked volume— or slipped. And while I found some really cool hats, I felt distinctly odd (and often too warm) wearing hats designed for the outdoors when I was at work or at social functions. I looked at different styles of hats to see what might work. The result is the Cool Headz Hat. When I wore my hats, I once again felt good about my appearance. I chose different hats to match my outfits—and my mood. The compliments I received made me smile.
I was then asked to make hats for other people and was delighted to find that my stylish, hip hats worked for them.
A second design — long hats was added, and people got creative! For every style I suggested, my customers showed me more—proving that truly the number of styles possible is limited only by imagination.
On my journey, I continue to be blessed with tremendous support—from family, my African dance and Italian class, my SASSY singing and book group, and from members of my church community. I return some of that kindness by donating 10% of my profit, by donating hats, by supporting friends going through cancer, and by volunteering for programs that raise awareness of early symptoms.
My hope is that a Cool Headz Hat will put a smile on your face, or the face of someone you love who is living with cancer.
Be well,
